Country brief

LGBTQ+ life in Afghanistan

Available evidence describes severe and persistent danger for people perceived to be lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer or gender nonconforming.

Evidence limitation: There is no reliable national census of LGBTQ+ Afghans. Under intense criminalization and stigma, many people cannot safely identify themselves to researchers.

Authorities and armed actors

Reports describe threats, detention, beatings, sexual violence, phone searches and efforts to locate people after they moved.

Family and community pressure

Forced marriage, confinement, expulsion from home, blackmail and violence can come from relatives or local networks.

Daily survival

Fear and concealment restrict access to work, education, housing, healthcare, movement and social support.

Documented findings

What major reports establish

Human Rights Watch and OutRight interviewed 60 LGBT Afghans from October to December 2021 and reported an increasingly desperate situation after the Taliban takeover. Rainbow Railroad later reported documenting abuses affecting more than 1,700 LGBTQI+ Afghans.

These figures represent people reached through specific documentation projects. They should not be presented as the size of Afghanistan’s LGBTQ+ population.

“Numbers show documented reach—not the full scale of a hidden community.”

Protection concerns

Identity exposure and digital searches

Messages, photographs, contact lists and social-media accounts can reveal identity or networks. People may use shared phones, which increases risk.

Gender expression

People perceived as gender nonconforming may be targeted in public spaces even when no private information is known.

Mental health and isolation

Concealment, loss, family rejection, economic insecurity and fear of violence can cause severe distress. Community-based support must be confidential and trauma-informed.

Barriers to evacuation

Lack of passports, visas, money, safe transport, documentation and destination-country pathways can make escape impossible or dangerous.
